Four rules for living your life

Adrian Tan held the graduation speech “Life And How To Survive It” for the class of 2008 at Nanyang Technological University (in Singapore). In it, he states four rules for living one’s life:
  1. Don’t work. [Or rather, make sure you love your job]
  2. Avoid telling the truth. [It may be dangerous or impossible]
  3. Be hated. [You will be if you do anything extraordinary]
  4. Love someone. [Being loved is trickier and involves compromises]
I don’t agree with all of it, for example, his notion of “the truth”. Truth can be very personal, especially when feelings are involved. But Tan certainly has interesting ideas. Rule #3 is a good one, very pertinent for people who publish on the internet (be it code or writings).
